The National Anti Snaring Campaign wants the banning of all types of snare used for 'pest control', whether it be a rabbit snare for snaring rabbit (or trapping rabbit) or fox snare.

I respect your situation but there must be an alternative to snaring, which if left in the wrong hands causes unspeakable agony and suffering, the pictures on this website are evidence of this alone.

I have nothing against hunting to eat for meat, man has done that for centuries. I do feel however that in the twenty first century that there are more humane ways to kill an animal, not the troglodyte method of snaring which is unspeakably cruel when in the wrong hands. Hence the ban. As for the rabbits on your land, perhaps you can shoot them, it is less time consuming than snaring, yet, with respect, you say you are too busy to do this. fitting a snare takes up much longer time. Ultimately every method has its disadvantages and drawbacks but snaring is quite frankly, vile. REgarding the animal rights people who raided that grave, I agree, that was disgusting, and they should be prosecuted. I don't wish to sound callous thoguh when I mention that that poor woman was dead (still no excuse though), when compared with the 500 animals who die every day in vivisectionlabs so that drug companies and corrupt industries push their poisons onto health services and DIY stores. Thalidomide, which led to thousands of birth deformities in children, as well as infanticide and some mothers going insane, was tested on animals for years beore being marketed. (incidentally, the drug company who manufactured this, Chemie Gruenthal, were cleared in court after it was establsihed that aniaml testing couldn't be relied upon to pass drugs as safe!! they also haven't paid the victims a penny in compensation). Wait there, I haven't finished yet. VAlium... (causes serious mental health probelms), Opfren (anti arthrtis caused excessive photosensitivity in patients), colquinol (anti diarroahea drug which caused thirtythousand cases of blindness in Japan alone), also the SSRI's such as seroxat.. (led to murder and suicide in many patients)... ALL THESE WERE TESTED ON ANIMALS... it could be your relative or beloved family member, or mine, taking these poisons, while Big Pharma makes millions using the obsolete and fraudulent method of animal testing to market drugs. If you ask me, the pharmaceutical companies don't want to cure disease... you cure disease such as cancer, you put them out of business, as well as teh whole private medical business. Anyway I digress. Use more humane methods. Best wishes.

Snaring is certainly not about pest control and conservation, neither is foxhunting. We are talking about cruel activities which cause needless suffering. As for foxes, nearly 300,000 are killed on the roads every year, compare this with 20,000 hunted and 50,000 killed through cubbing.Conservation? Don't make me laugh. It's sadism, and it is now illegal, and these laws will be enforced to the maximum as time goes on and the political landscape and the public mood turns against you even further. Foxhunting is totally unnatural. Ancient man never hunted for sport, indeed in all religions and cultures this was prohibited, especially by the Native Americans (who unlike yourself literally lived off the land, it was a matter of life and death for them). It is counterproductive and a waste of resources in evolutionary terms to hunt purely for sport and pleasure. I cannot stop you personally from snaring, but I have known many people destroy snares and as said I do so myself. It is a cruel way to kill an animal, if left unattended, as many snares are, the animal takes days to die, and dies in agony. This too will soon be made illegal, until then, all I have to say to you is SNIP SNIP!! In the past fortnight I think I've done nearly a dozen, and in the next fortnight I'll have done a dozen more, and guess what, soon police wildlife officers will be doing it, and to your snares too. I'll let you know how I get on.

Oh it's you again, I thought you'd gone away. I won't have internet access much longer, but your ridiculous message below actually made me laugh. regarding killing animals, of course you cannot stop it completely, when I walk my dogs I tread on a snail accidentally, but this is the whole point, it was an accident... I couldn't help it. But the fact is that YOU CAN! Recently a friend of mine rescued a fox which later died... apparently it had been caught in a snare and teh wire had cut into its stomach causing intense pain,it had been like this in agony for days and despite the best efforts of the vet team it died horribly. This sickens most people, but with you it's normal, and with other snarers this sort of disgusting thing turns them on. The conservative party do not have a majority in teh house of commons to oppose any bill that is brought to ban snaring, even if they all vote against it (which they won't). And with the ever increasing violent attacks on saboteurs (the recent one a pregnant woman and an elderly woman, both taken to hospital) it won't be long before this law is enforced to the full. Give it up, you're going to lose so why don't you find another less cruel past time. Do you have a shop where you live? I just wondered, as it seems to me that you don't use it very much to buy food from it. Perhaps you live in a cave. SNIP SNIP!!! I'll keep you posted on how many I cut up this week.

I also would like you to know that when you find one of your snares cut in bits after the work you've put into it, that it was probably either someone like me who did it, or that I DID IT!! While there are scum around like you who enjoy this disgusting and cruel activity, there'll always be people around like me who will be cutting up your snares and stopping everything that you do. Snaring is cruel, as said I have seen many animals chew their limbs off when caught in a snare, you may be more humane than others but I have known snarers who are absolute bastards and quite frankly don't care a damn how much suffering the animal is going through. Also how on earth can you compare snaring to having a dog on a leash? at least the ladybird caught in a spider's web is killed within a minute or so by venom from the spider. As long as there are animals suffering needlessly, and in agony, as this website clearly shows, there will alwyas be people like myself snipping and destroying snares, and there is absolutely bugger all you or anyone can do about it. SNIP SNIP!

Dear all.

I would like to know the difference between a mouse that gets caught in a trap by, lets say, its nose or leg and a rabbit in a snare.

How about the difference between a dog straining on a lead and a rabbit in a snare.

Or a lady bird who wandered into a spiders web only to be constrained, then wrapped by the web and the blood sucked from its body by the spider and a rabbit in a snare.

Let me tell you- there is none. There is no difference between a rabbit in a snare and a dog tied up outside the supermarket. People are under the impression it strangles the animal, instead it mearly holds them.

I agree if the snare is improperly laid there is a chance the animal is caught by the leg and if it is not lawfully checked the animal may attempt to chew its leg off. But if the snarer is skilled these events are minimised to being less likely than an injured animal being left for dead on the road.

Sorry if I bored you, I am merely straightening out a few minor differences this site is so bent on blowing out of all proportion.

Thanks for your time o ye of little forsight.

Christ knows what country you live in but over here it is legal- Britain. Snaring is the most effective way to control damage to the environment by over population of species such as rabbits. It is not cost effective to employ rabbit shooters of a night to shoot 20 rabbits.

If snaring is done skillfully, considerately and they are checked every 12 hours, as the law dictates, only the intended quarry is held and they are not distressed due to the small time the animal is held in the snare.

I would like to see the author below on my land vandalising my snares so I can report him to the police for criminal damage, trespassing and anti-social behaviour. He will be running like a girl and realise I am not a little boy but a landowner with large, agressive, over-protective dogs with no leash's.

I have known rabbits and foxes chew off limbs which are caught in snares. If you honestly think that this is less suffering than road deaths then you clearly thick. Snaring is cruel, it is already illegal and as time moves on this law will be enforced more and more. Most of the people who snare here haven't go the guts to go to prison for it, they'd shit themselves within ten minutes, especially the twat who thinks that snaring is no better than a spider's web.

The cat caught in the snare is a one in ten thousand incident. Relate that to the number of cats lying on the road, run over every day of the year. It is an isolated incident that is not worth persuing. The uneducated people that support the issue of banning snares do so because they believe it is an easy option to do some good and do not reaslise the integral importance to the conservation of the countryside that snaring is. Try banning the use of cars... oh I forgot, snaring will be much easier.

I got in touch with the campaign a couple of years ago before the second lot of signatures was presented and corresponded with Jaine a few times, and also collected some signatures for the petition. Since then I've lost touch a bit but a story in this week's local free paper, regarding a cat found dead in a snare, prompted me to check if the campaign was still running. I can't believe that snares still haven't been totally outlawed! I will send you a copy of the story for your records, and I intend to write to the local paper highlighting the campaign. Now that fox hunting is soon to be banned (which will save around 90,000 wild animals each year) we need to now focus on saving MILLIONS of wild animals from a slow, lingering death. How do we do this ? Not by worrying about the few thousands that get caught in traps and snares. To save MILLIONS of wild animals all we need to do is kill all the domestic cats. There are estimated to be over 8 million cats in Britain, if each of them only kill one wild mammal or bird each year that means over 8 million wild animals die and we all know that cats will each catch many wild animals each. These wild animals die a slow and painfull death, much slower than the supposed cruel death of the hunted fox, as anyone who has watched a cat playing with their prey will know.So come on all you out there who are purporting to be genuinely into saving wildlife lets get the "SAVE WILDLIFE, GET RID OF CATS" campagn going in 2005. Can snares be used to catch these wildlife mass killers ? e-mail cathunter2005@breakthru.com Tel. 07967 891 504 Text only please do not waste your time leaving voicemail messages. you think your funny do you. Next youll get cruelty to ants banned. You make me sick. You people dont have a clue about the country and nature.

If nature was not cruel we would not have evolved neither would any other creature. we would all be stuck as single celled creatures called ameoba.

The process of evolution is cruel, so is mother nature. You cant get away from that fact by banning something as trivial as snaring. that is riduiculous.

I look at this site and thinkk how pathetic you all are. the main source of propaganda that this site uses is the use of dead animals. this happens all the time by hundredes of different means. roads, natural predators, lack of food, hunting.

these can all be "cruel" or "crueller" than snaring. In saying crueller i mean more gory which is what this site seems to love- the goryer the better!!! Because it cuts into the hearts of weak individuals who have nothing better to do than feel sorry for something to cheer them up.

What you really need to do is think of ways to constructivly improve the country. You can do this by leaving it alone. it has functioned very well for the last millenia before people who know nothing about it came in and started suggesting improvements!!

How can you suggest improvements if you dont have a clue about how the system of nature works. and you dont have a clue. this is evident from the lack or real explanation on this site. Oh its "cruel" i forgot!!

Snaring is a fundamental vermin control method. Without it the countryside would be like the cities are nowadays with high crime rates, violence and disorder. Presumably you dont want the cities to continue down this road so dont let the countryside start!

any help would be very greatfully received,,,,,,, on friday 13th aug 04 one of our cats went missing;she was only just over a year old;after a few days we put an advert in the local paper , we had plenty of calls-then we got the one we didnt want;the local vicar called us to say his son had found a cat,a dead cat in the back of the vicarage;so my wife and mother in law went over to investigate and, yes it was our little cat--- she had been snared on an illegal snare not 100 yards from our home. the snare had been cut and, the body of our cat was then thrown over the wall at the vicarage[ now do you think that the person who done this was behaving in a rational manor] no; his actions were that of a fledgling serial killer;because that is how they start by-killing small animals and, torturing them. this so called member of our society is nothing more than an ongoing killing machine to small animals, weather they are loved family pets or members of the wild life; be them rabits foxes e.t.c none of the above animals deserve to be cruely killed in this way; so please could anyone advise me as to how to persue this matter and, to try to bring a satisfactory conclusion to this matter. I have reported this to the police and the r.s.p.c.a. also the paper is going to run an article to warn others to the danger of snares in our TOWN, thank you for looking. p.s I will not rest until I manage to prosicute the person responsable for killing our pet , she was also a friend to our children----- soppy---yes--but any one of you out there could lose some one you love very soon-- how well would you cope then? our eldest son has autism and how do you explain to him what has happend, he just would not understand---pulling at heart strings---yes--- but again any one of you out there could only just be a car ride away from being handicaped/or your son/mother/husbnd or wife--- these snares have just taken away our pet and our sons friend...DONT LET IT HAPPEND TO YOU......becaue any of the above can.

i have read some of these comments about people disagreeing with antisnaring and I am disgusted. Some say a snare is merely a holding device and does not kill, therefore claiming that they themselves snare for fun. What is the joy of seeing a wounded animal? I am sure that if it was one of your pets that had been snared you would have different views! How would you feel if someone decided to trap you in a snare and claimed it wasn't to kill, just to hold the animal? Would it be funny then? Placing snares is inducing animal cruelty and should be prohibited. Maiming animals is wrong not right or fun in any case. All those people who disagree and agree that snaring should continue in the U.K should be ashamed of themselves. It is appalling to think of those poor innocent animals killed for absolutely no reason but for enjoyment. I think it is those people that need to 'get a life' and find another hobby instead of causing the countries animals pain. No wonder there are endangered species such as tigers and seals in the world with these kind of people.

We have found this website very useful in providing information and we have used the downloadable petition to help. We will definitely be re-visiting this site to see any news or updates on helping animals. Anyone reading this, please try to save the animals, Choose Life for animals, they need it. Thank you.

I live on a country estate in scotland and have several cats. About three weeks ago one of my cats disappeared then five days ago another one went missing. On the fourth day of not seeing her I went looking in the woods and was horrified to discover her caught tight around the waist by a snare attached to a post. I eventually managed to free her, the loop of cable that had been around her was only a few inches wide so had cut right in and she could hardly move her back legs.

After a bit of internet research I found the snare type to an AB fox snare which had acted as an illegal self-locking snare, Also I believe it is illegal for a gamekepper not to check snares every day and this snare had not been checked for at least four days as was evident by her injuries and the length of time she was missing.

Unfortunately I suspect that the other cat was also caught in a snare and probably died from his injuries or was killed by the keeper.

Those that think snaring is ok are either sick in the head (as is evident by some of the other posts) or have never seen a snare in action.

Snaring should be banned outright as it is a horrific and barbaric way for ANY animal to meet their end.

p.s To hell with the toffs and their blood thirsty hobbies!

It is important that people look at the comments from the sort of people who set snares. It is said that a picture can paint a thousand words, but in this case there is a paradox; because the mindless rant of the average snarer tells more about them than any picture.

antisnaring people are girl. or if they are a guy, they must still live with their mama. antisnaring people are dumb. try to stop people from killing other people, or something like that. snaring is good. why not go against hunting. it kills them. snaring just holds the animal, and doesn't kill it.

ur site sucks! i am a trapper and use mainly snares. they harm the animal as much as coilsprings or longsprings. (for you anti trapping idiots out there, a foot trap.) Last season I proudly caught 2 coyotes with snares. it caught them around the neck, and they suffocated. I also caught a couple of beavers, and about twenty raccoons. I am proud to trap. it is our american heritage. it helped expand much of the us. it also keeps the animals in control, so that outbreaks of diseases don't start. trapping is good. signing off, andrew ps trapping rules. conibears rule!

From NASC Director: Tom Bottrill a law student at Oxford University has counted up the Guest book for and against contributions, but with respect is missing the point of the guest book. While we welcome contributions from all sides, the contributions from those who support snares are most valuable! At last I found a site devoted to the beautiful and merciless act of snaring. For so long I have been greeted with antisnaring sites aplenty and long for a real fanbase, now i've found it. I wanted to share my new methods. I've wired up a snare to be so specific in its capture that its catches 2,3 or four limbs, without killing it. Then I can come and remove the meats with the greatest of ease. Seeing the heartbeat gradually lessen as I consume some raw flesh is a sight to behold. Thanks again for the opportunity to share my knowledge and hopefully gain some also. Patrick Moore xxx

We researched into this matter and conducted a poll through the guest book counting the anti snarers against the pro snares. To my dire dissapiontment the results favoured pro snarers. What a shame. The results were 56.88% towards pro snares. I say again 56.88%, 56.88%. The evidence speaks for itself in this case and clearly identifies that, to put it bluntly, laying snares is more enjoyable the destroying them. Many congratulations on such an informative website and sterling work

Ever since I was a small child I have been aware that the countryside, with its array of beautiful wild creatures, hides a level of barbarity, which few city/town dwellers could imagine. As for the claim that snares are merely used to contain “vermin” (for humane dispatch) and/or that they are checked regularly etc etc – utter, utter, rubbish!!

It doesn’t surprise me in the slightest that the pro-snarers (who are equally pro-hunt) have posted their sick messages in your guest book – desperation knows no measures!

Unfortunately, many landowners in the UK, along with their social climbing toadies, believe they have the right to carry out any activity they like on their own land, especially “field sports”, snaring etc. This is hardly surprising when we consider the claim that “throughout England and Wales 25,918,370 acres of land is occupied by 157,367 individuals or families. This is 0.28% of the population, who own 64% of the land”. I invite you all to peruse “THE RICH AT PLAY”, which explains the background to this extraordinary state of affairs – the following link will lead to compelling reading: http://www.red-star-research.org.uk/rap/rapframe.html

Incredible though it may seem, to normal and decent people, there are those out there who get some sort of adrenaline rush/pleasure from inflicting pain on the wild creatures inhabiting our countryside. Psychologists will tell you that there is an inextricable link between cruelty to animals and cruelty to fellow humans – is it any wonder that, relative to its size, this country spawns so many serial killers and inhumane people?

We're supposed to be civilised people, let's behave as such!

Do 'Pro-snarers' not realise that swearing and insulting simply worsens their reputation? The Pros say that snaring is only meant to hold the animal, but that doesn't alter the fact that it is very likely animals WILL be strangled or injured in some way. My dog got caught in a snare only a few weeks ago. It fastened itself around her neck. We told her to stay, and luckily she was sensible enough to remain still until we removed the horrible device. It is unusual, and disturbing, to think that snaring is some kind of sport or hobby. Somebody who finds it fun to strangle or injure animals? I think that's very wrong. The idea of spraying Renardine around the area of a snare to keep animals away is a very good one, I hadn't thought of it. Remember, everyone, that Renardine is a very effective method of pest control, and nothing needs to die inhumanely. Nothing, in fact, needs to die at all. There is no excuse for those who think that strangling animals is the only form of pest control.

Snares are useful in the control of rabbits- simply put them somewhere a badger, etc can't go, like in a wire rabbit run made by the rabbits tunnelling under chickenwire. It's far too small for a badger to get into the snare.

Well done team on a great site - No doubt that New Labour will be making yet more promises on action here as well on the lead up to the next Gen. Election. If we can find out the names of people who snare, then maybe we can put them forward to Tony Blair (sorry - President Campbell - un-elected and un-wanted) for inclusion in the next line of CBEs, OBEs etc. After all, s******g on the public is what New labour are best at. As for the Tories, well they obviously have no problem with animal abuse, as they almost all seem to support hunting. Guess that is why Willy H did so well last time round. Fight on my friends - good will win in the end; CBE or not.

I am most impressed with your website - it is informative, factual and simply 'says it like it is'. As Projects Manager of one of Britains largest and most respected wildlife hospitals in Cambridgeshire I am deeply grateful that at long last we have a graphic, but certainly not emotive website that allows the average person to see and understand exactly what is involved with this disgusting and barbaric so called method of wildlife control. During the last 30+ years I have seen thousands of animals (both wild and domestic) and indeed even birds, that have been brought into our hospitals having been found trapped and mutilated in a snare. The average person would be physically sick at the sight of a newly admitted patient on the operating table that had spent days waiting to die with a snare around it's neck, body or leg. It is simply a myth to suggest that snares are inspected every 24 hours - most snares are set and then left for an indefinite period. The animal caught in the snare is rarely, if ever, 'humanely despatched' as those that set snares suggest is the case, and these animals will die of a combination of blood loss and dehydration/starvation over a period of days. Most injuries inflicted by snares cannot be treated and the usual outcome is amputation or euthanasia. It seems almost incredible that in the year 2002 we still allow the indiscriminate use of snares in the UK. It is almost impossible to bring a prosecution on the grounds of cruelty when an animal is found to have suffered unecessarily whilst caught in a snare. In the main this is because a large proportion of the snares that are set, are set on private land and in areas where game birds/animals are reared. Hunting/shooting estates are often the main culprits when it comes to the indiscriminate use of snares but this sector of society has historically been 'untouchable' when it comes to being held accountable for this type of atrocity. I note that one 'pro-hunt' individual has suggested in your guest book that we need to ensure that hunting continues so that snaring does not increase as a result of a ban. The logic of this remark is lost on me. When it comes to hunting wild animals we are still in the dark ages in this country and it seems almost incredible to suggest, in light of this, that we are still a nation of animal lovers. A vast majority of UK residents are normal, well balanced people but a small minority of sick and perverted individuals still get pleasure from seeing animals and birds suffer unecessarily. There is no worse form of suffering than dying whilst caught in a snare. We need to wake up to this fact and ensure that legislation is put in place that will not only ban 'all' types of hunting but that will also outlaw snaring with a custodial sentence for those that are found to have breached the law.

During the debates in both Houses of Parliament on the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981, Labour attempted to have all snares outlawed. In the Committee Stage an amendment to ban all snares was narrowly lost (by two votes) due to pro-hunting Tory MPs. It was clear from the tone of the debates however, that both sides anticipated that snares would soon have to be outlawed due to their undoubted cruelty. That was more than two decades and more than a million animal snaring deaths ago. Labour's policy for a ban on snaring has never been rescinded, so why is the government doing nothing about snares? hi, jim cormack here from the sspca. I was at westminster yesterday with yourselves. I think perhaps you have overdone it with material on badgers. your campaign is 'national ANTI SNARING' I realise the nfbg has put most effort into this but there are by far many more issues than badgers and it would probably have had more impact if you had used a more wider ranging campaing using ALL animals snared. sorry if these comments offend, but are meant to be constructive.

A professional and informative website. Well worth all the time, effort and expertise that must have gone into its production. What a 'piece of work' are some humans that they can use their ingenuity to turn a simple length of wire into such suffering for a harmless creature - and all part of the dirty business of breeding other creatures to be killed for sport. The more people are educated by websites such as yours the better. It is only secrecy that protects those who indulge in these disgusting practices. Keep up the good work!

Hi Team,

This site is excellent it shows the facts as they are on the use of snares on our wildlife and shows why they should be banned. The use of snares is barbaric cruel and out dated we have more humane means to deal with wildlife that do not harm animals just move them on so why must we keep snares. If this Government wants to show that it cares about animal welfare then it should ban every form of snare now.

Hi

And a very welcom campaing and web site, it's an issue which can be overlooked with so much cruelty issues out their that face animals.

I am delighted that this campaign is here and with the ban on hunting that is on the cards this campaign is well timed as it is then that we have to be more vilagent to ensure killing is not carried out on mass.

On the behalf of Labour Animal Welfare Society we support your campaign and efforts.

All the best.

Snaring is a despicable form of indiscriminate murder. Not only is it an appallingly slow and painful way to die but snares are rarely checked. When creatures are trapped they have little chance of survival.

The claim is made snares are to stop vermin - vermin is a human definition to describe any creature which is to be considered an obstruction to human-derived profit. In this case the mass-slaughter of livestock (in which case decent husbandry methods and an understanding of biodiversity would eradicate the supposed need to kill natural predators) or other creatures bred for shooting or hunting.

Indiscriminate killing to protect indiscriminate killing.

The same 'vermin' would be symbiotic in their relationship with the natural environment, our environment, our natural heritage if there wasn't the degradation of the natural world by a few (sick blood junkies) which follows on in other forms of animal abuse.

DESTROY ALL SNARES.

If you see a snare dismantle it, remove it and report it to the NASC or your local sab group.
